Bookmark
A bookmark in Internet terms is similar in function to the bookmark you use to keep your
place while reading a book. While browsing and surfing the World Wide Web, you will run
across many interesting areas. Everytime you find a place that really interests you, and
you know you would like to visit it again, you should "bookmark" the location.
Each of the two more popular browsers "Netscape Navigator" and "Internet
Explorer" has an easy way to save bookmarks. In "Navigator" there is a
button named "Bookmarks", and in "Explorer" there is a button named
"Favorites". Saving bookmarks is as simple as clicking one of those buttons.
Computer access technology
Computer access technology refers to the devices and techniques that are used to provide a
user with disabilities the ability to effectively use a computer, even if they cannot make
use of a mouse, keyboard, monitor or speakers. These latter devices are standard
input/output devices. During an assessment process, the assessor uses alternatives to
these devices. These alternatives might include: alternative keyboards, trackballs, voice
recognition, speech output, blinking alerts, and a number of others. Other alternatives
may have nothing to do with the hardware, but rather specialized or adapted software. For
some additional descriptions of adaptations for computers , go
to Possibilities Unlimited. For descriptions of other kinds of assistive technology,
besides adapted computers , go to Assistive Technology.
Hypertext Link A hypertext link is a pointer to another page or
to a totally new location. Links help to make the World Wide Web so fascinating. They are
used to associate and connect concepts and scattered pieces of information. Watch out
though, because they can also cause you to "get lost."
All text links are underlined. Whenever you click on a link it takes you someplace
else, almost immediately. When you pass your mouse or other pointing device over the link,
the cursor turns from an arrow to a pointing finger. When the cursor changes state, and
you click the button, you activate the link.
Sometimes pictures on a page are also links. You can tell if the picture is a link,
because again the cursor changes from an arrow to a pointing finger.
Systems Integrator A systems integrator makes sure that all
the components making up an adapted computer system work with each other. He/she assures
that there is enough power and memory in the computer to match the requirements of any and
all added peripherals (these are the hardware devices that are connected to the computer)
and software.
Tool Bar The tool bar appears right below the Menu Bar on
your browser. In many instances the various "tools" can be used instead of
clicking on menu items. The back button is one such tool. When you want to get back to
previous places you have been, click on the Back button. You will eventually get back to
where you began.
There are different tools on each of the more popular browsers. Become familiar with
them.
