Yesterday's Memories

Christmas manger

I used to look forward to the holidays, especially Christmas time. When my sister and I were small we used to sleep together upstairs in her bed. Although we didn't sleep very much for looking at the clock all night, to see if morning had arrived just to hurry downstairs just to open our Xmas presents.

Our Grandparents used to live in the country, and that is where we would spend our Christmas day. Mawmaw would spend all morning cooking a big meal for everybody. After we all ate the big meal that Mawmaw had made, everybody would gather around and open Christmas presents, and then just laid around and rested. Leaving Mom and Mawmaw cleaning up and washing the dishes. I often wondered if the rest of the family members ever appreciated the big meals that Mawmaw prepared for all of us.

Mawmaw and Pawpaw had a hill in their back yard. And when it snowed on Christmas day, all of us kids would go out and sleigh ride down the back yard. I knew that I would get a asthma attack from the cold, but Dad would take me out and we would go sleigh riding down the hill and then he would dump me over in the snow. Then when Dad and I came in the house, I would have to take asthma medicine, for I would be in a asthma attack. I can still remember my favorite Aunt Ina with that worried look on her face as I was trying to breathe. But after the medicine took effect, I was all right. It was worth it, just to have the same kind of fun like my sister and the rest of my cousins had.
